International Comparison of Differences in Premature deaths and their causes in NDPHS Partner Countries measured by Potential Year of Life Lost Indicator (PYLL)

The global objective of the Study was to assist the Northern  Dimension  Partnership  in  Public  Health  and Social Well-being’s (NDPHS) Expert Group and the relevant government stakeholders to raise awareness and understanding among administrators and politicians of the power of evidence based measures against preventable threats to health, and to provide them with a better leverage for effective measures to improve the health ofpeople, women and men alike.

The specific objective of the Study was to assess the country disease specific causes of premature deaths according to main categories of preventable premature  deaths by  Potential  Years  of  Life  Lost  (PYLL)  in  Estonia,  Finland,  Germany,  Latvia,  Lithuania,  Norway,  Poland, Sweden, and Belarus. The Russian Federation decided to be excluded from this study. The disease specific PYLL-rates will serve as bases of evidence to improve the health of the focus populations. An  important  aim  was  also  to  link  the NDPHS prevention  work  with  EU  initiative  "Bridging  Information  and  Data  Generation  for Evidence-based  Health  Policy  and  Research" to  facilitate  a  European  health  information  and  data  generation  network.
